The call for a comprehensive ban on gambling advertisements in Australia is gaining momentum and becoming increasingly vocal.
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has recently joined the chorus urging the government to act promptly and decisively. They advocate for a complete ban on online gambling ads to safeguard vulnerable consumers and ensure protection for players across Australia.
The AMA supports the recommendation from the “You win some, you lose more” parliamentary inquiry report, which highlights the negative impact of pervasive gambling ads and suggests a complete ban within three years. The report underscores the financial and social costs of these ads, which ultimately burden society.
AMA argues that the damage caused by gambling ads outweighs any potential tax revenue benefits. AMA President Professor Steve Robson has criticized any hesitation on this issue as “extremely disappointing,” calling for immediate government action.
“The government must prioritize the welfare of Australian communities over the profits of large corporations, particularly those communities most affected by problem gambling,” Professor Robson stated.
With Australians losing approximately $25 billion annually to gambling, there is a growing need for stricter industry regulation. The proposed partial ban, which would restrict gambling ads to two per channel per hour, has been met with criticism from prominent figures.
The AMA, along with other leaders, is pushing for a full ban rather than a partial one, arguing that a partial ban would not adequately address or mitigate gambling-related harm. Opposition leaders have also suggested implementing a global tech tax to offset potential revenue losses from reduced gambling sponsorships on free TV.
The Albanese government has faced accusations of siding with the gambling industry, though lawmakers assert their concerns are focused on potential unintended consequences rather than succumbing to lobbyist pressures.
